That\u2019s because they feel they need to do more work and exert extra effort as a sign of their indebtedness.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how can you keep enjoying what you love about working remotely while not suffering from any of the downsides? Read on for these expert-backed tips:&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Decorate and declutter<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A dreary environment (think: working in a dark, cluttered basement) can add to your loneliness, says Gelb. So while you may not be hosting meetings in your home office, it\u2019s a good idea to ask yourself if your physical surroundings are doing any favors \u2014 or harm \u2014 to your emotional state day-to-day. If there\u2019s room for improvement, start by removing clutter,\u201d suggests Gelb. \u201cThen, add beauty \u2014 whether that\u2019s with plants, a desktop wallpaper that sparks joy, family photos, or framed inspirational quotes.\u201d Visual reminders that you\u2019re not alone \u2014 even if you&nbsp;<em>work&nbsp;<\/em>alone \u2014 can buoy you with a sense of connection.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Socialize at home<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When home is where you live&nbsp;<em>and&nbsp;<\/em>work, you may start to see your home as a source of anxiety or boredom. One way to shift the energy is to invite in more fun. \u201cHave a few people over for a potluck dinner at your home,\u201d Gelb suggests. \u201cThen present a deep, thoughtful question for everyone to reflect upon and answer.\u201d Gelb calls these \u201cthought-starter dinner parties,\u201d and says they can help cultivate fulfilling relationships and meaningful contact after a solo workday. It\u2019s easy to fall into a rut of not talking to anyone except the grocery store clerk, but \u201cit\u2019s so important to have<em>&nbsp;real<\/em>&nbsp;conversations with friends,\u201d adds Gelb.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Go outside<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting up from your desk periodically and taking a break \u2014 preferably outside \u2014 is always a good idea. But it\u2019s especially important if you work from home. \u201cBeing in nature can ease your loneliness and replenish your energy,\u201d says Gelb. And if the weather doesn\u2019t cooperate, just get up and move around your own home for a bit. Movement is an important way to oxygenate your brain and prevent that stagnant, lonely feeling that arises when we\u2019re sedentary.&nbsp;<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Take your emotional inventory<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s a simple habit for self-care: Once you close your laptop each day, take out a pen and paper to\u00a0mark a real end to your workday\u00a0with an \u201cemotional inventory\u201d check, Gelb suggests. \u201cWrite down any situations where you felt especially lonely, depressed, or anxious.\u201d Doing a spot-check on how you\u2019re feeling helps you avoid unintended isolation and frustration. For instance, if you know you\u2019re unsettled, you might prioritize more connection that night.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stick to your schedule<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be difficult to ensure your work stress doesn\u2019t follow you home when you work\u00a0<em>at\u00a0<\/em>home, and that\u2019s why it\u2019s crucial to declare a real end to your workday. When you\u2019re finished with your tasks, take time to unplug and do something that nourishes you, Gelb suggests. \u201cTechnology is incredible, but unplugged time is essential, too \u2014 time with no devices, no email, and no social media,\u201d she adds. That could be a quick mediation, a stretch, a bath \u2014 whatever.
